I think everything is relative. how bad is your diabetes, are you on meds, etc...
When I went to Italy for two weeks, I knew there was no way I was NOT going to eat my mom's homemade pasta (not everyday), her really good paella, her killer risotto with mushrooms (these are rice dishes cooked with white arborio rice). I also had homemade gelato (twice) and pizza (twice). I did balance that with lots of walking and swimming, every single day. Being on vacation means I'm not chained to a desk so I can do these things. I had a wonderful time, and my numbers never went too crazy. Honestly, I didn't check after eating gelato. But I did watch my portions and almost always after 2 hrs I was under 120. A few times I was 130. But in the end, my a1c came back at 5.8, so averaging it all out, it wasn't too bad. Don't worry, the stress will do you in! IMHO, it's not the things we do once in a while, it's the things we do every day that make the difference.
