New Study - Gastric bypass DOES NOT suppress appetite, nor "fix" blo

About three years ago, I went through the entire prep for the lap band surgery. The docs told me I was a perfect candidate, in spite of being 57 at the time. I met with a psychologist, both privately and in group, attended group support meetings, and in fact jumped through all the hoops, except for actually setting up a surgery date... and oh yeah, I couldn't seem to lose the 22 lbs they wanted me to lose pre-surgery. In the end, I decided against the whole thing. The biggest reason I backed out was because they told me I would undoubtedly regain the weight if I didn't diet for the rest of my life. I figured, well, I can diet the rest of my life all by myself, why should I get maimed and put thousands of $$$ in the docs' and hospital's pockets for that?

I still can't figure out for sure if I made the right decision or not, but I think I did, because honestly, 3 years later, I don't regret backing out, and I have no plans to reopen that can of worms. To have bariatric surgery done is an intensely personal decision-- I figure, as long as everyone goes into it with eyes wide open, maybe it's an acceptable risk. After all, someone, somewhere, must have long-term success with it. But it's not for me.
