I agree about the testing but it's certainly not the case for me or for many diabetics that two bites of rice will cause " an unacceptable rise in BG. " I'm type 2 and using Byetta and metformin and bedtime Lantus and half a cup of brown rice or pasta or 4 0z of potato even, do not cause any rise in my BG. In fact my evening BG after dinner tends to go low no matter what I eat.
Life as a diabetic is hard enough without scaring people into thinking they can never eat anything they love again. For most of us it's about finding a balance that we can live without giving up the pleasure of food or dining out. Sometimes the advice on this list is depressingly rigid and extreme. Spikes in BG are as much about portion control and the amount of things we eat as what we eat. It is also quite possible to eat out without doing much damage to BG control. Chinese restaurants always offer some weight watchers dishes like chicken or beef with broccoli and you can ask for the sauce on the side. I also eat at Italian restaurants and order a big salad with grilled chicken or get a meat or fish entree with a salad without the pasta. It's a challenge but there is always something to eat at most restaurants. If you want to splurge seafood restaurants are the best..Shrimp, scallops, lobster, steak are all carb free. Just skip the bread and potato and have a big salad or some green veggies and a glass of wine. No reason to stop living because you are diabetic. Food is one of the great pleasures in life and there is lots that we can eat without worry and some things we can only have a small amount of every once in a while.
I have to agree with Suzanne here. We eat out 2 or 3 times a week. Last night was an Italian restaurant where I had a lovely chicken breast and salad while those around me ate pasta. We have a favorite burger joint that piles on the cheese and all kinds of veges, so all I have to do is remove the bun. Mexican restaurants will gladly leave the beans out of their taco salads and serve it without the tortilla shell. Ask for what you want and it's a rare restaurant that won't accommodate you. They don't want to lose your business.
