Knowledge is power! At first, testing 6-8 times a day is not unreasonable, but make sure to keep a careful written log, recording the time of day, test result, how you're feeling at the time, what you ate and when, details about exercise, etc. Then slowly, over a week or two or three, you'll start to see how what you're doing affects you. I will warn you though that even experienced diabetics can't always tell a 60 from a 260. Going just by the way you "feel" is not always the best way by any means. Shaky woozy weird and weak can be equally applied symptoms to either a high or a low, after all. Testing eliminates the guesswork.
As long as you don't take insulin, you will probably eventually be able to get by on one or two tests a day, but for now, when everything's so new to you, don't be afraid to test right before each meal and then two hours after the beginning of each meal, plus at bedtime. You'll be amazed at what you learn about yourself. Remember, knowledge is power, and without it, you can't make informed decisions about your own self care.
