Is your doc an internist? From what I can see from comments made on the two large diabetes yahoo groups I belong to, it looks like a lot of family doc/PCPs don't have much of a handle on how to manage their type two patients. Some internists actually specialize in diabetes. And of course, endocrinologists specialize in our care, as well as the care of other hormonally based disorders. If you like your doctor a lot but just feel as though you need specialized care for your diabetes, ask for a referral to an endo. Many of them have 6 month waiting lists, but you'll get in there eventually, and I know you'll be glad you did. It's wonderful to go to a doctor where everyone there understands what you're dealing with, and you're not treated like a nuisance.
Maximum dose for metformin is actually right around 2000 mg a day, so maybe you could take more of it. Actos is famous for causing weight gain, so if you have weight issues, you might ask for a different hypoglycemic med. Are you due to see your doctor soon, to review how things are going?
IMO if you have to cut all starches out of your diet to get anywhere near normal numbers, it's time to change something, for sure. You exercising? Even walking helps. We'll gladly help if we can. Just fire away with any comments or questions. This is a good group, and I'm glad you found us.
I actually adore my doctor - I have been with the same one for 16 years, and he takes really good care of me. He was recently diagnosed with diabetes himself, so he now knows firsthand just what I am dealing with. He is incredibly supportive, and does all he can to help me out financially.
He actually wanted to add Byetta to my list of meds, but I can't afford it. I just got a job that offers insurance, but it will be the end of the year before they will cover my diabetes treatment.
The last time we met, we talked about several options -- the byetta, insulin (cheaper and more effective?), a clinical study that was available at the time, and the Lapband surgery, which my parents have offered to pay for, due to my health issues. However, the day before that discussion, I actually found out my ex was being a big fat jerk, and I almost lost my home. I have had to get an attorney, blah blah blah. In short, I lost all my focus on health and have been dealing with other things. I am now trying desperately to getmy focus back, but it has been a struggle.
As far as exercise, not lately (see some of the other responses.) My girls go stay with their dad for two weeks, as of SUnday. I am considering a punch card to the gym, just to get me moving again. I know I can probably work through a weight training circuit. But it is critical that I lose some weight soon, even if it is a painful process. BUt really, I have so many challenges, I really don't know where to start!
