Diabetes: Lows v shighs

I am much more concerned about highs than lows. I am on prandin and lantus and sometimes metformin and shoot for a range of 85-130 max. I like to wake up at 90ish when possible. I have to fight hard to keep it in this range, as I was diagnosed at 575 and can easily hit a 200 if not on top of it. I am about to move from orals to all insulin.>

It sounds as though lows are not an issue for you yet. They will be as you come into better control, especially if at some point your doctor gets you started on a rapid-acting insulin to take at meals (Humalog, Novolog).Well, I say "they will be", but let me amend that and say they probably will be-- anyone who takes insulin and is in good control has to be pretty vigilant about testing and not ignoring their self care and awareness of possibly symptoms of lows.

Your doc might want you to stay on metformin if you tolerate it well. It's not strictly speaking a hypoglycemic, but it really helps your body's cells be less insulin resistant, and it also works on the liver so it will back off from releasing so much glucose into the bloodstream during times of fasting or exercise. Many insulin users also take metformin and are helped by it.
