Are we injecting the insulin in the wrong place?

>Okay so my husband has been on insulin for a week and his numbers are worse.<

It's normal for there to be some up and down fluctuation in blood glucose numbers, from day to day. A lot depends on food intake, exercise, stress level, lots of things. I'm not sure what you meant by "worse", whether you're seeing a small amount of worse or a large amount of worse.

>Are we injecting the insulin in the wrong place? So far we have tried about 2-3 inches from the belly button and on the back of the arm.<

Thigh, upper arm, belly are the usual places. Just not too close to the belly button (2-3 inches away is fine), and make sure to rotate spots.

>I am getting concerned. Thanks for your help Oh he is currently on 17 units of Lantus<

Remember that your doctor and his staff are right at the end of your telephone wire, so you should feel free to call them anytime during office hours if you need advice. Someone should be on call even during the night and weekends to help, if something you can't handle arises.

17 units of Lantus is still a relatively small dose. Does the doc have him increasing it every couple of days? It often takes a few weeks to find the right dose level, and lots of people end up taking mealtime rapid-acting insulin in addition to the Lantus. These are early days for your husband, so a lot of patience is needed right now. Gradually, the right dosage combo will be found, don't worry. And do pick up the phone and ask for reassurance from your medical providers-- that's what they're there for! Let us know how you make out, okay?
