Any Thoughts or Suggestions for Diabetics?

Have a question with type 2 Diabetes, blood sugar was 212 very sleepy and falling why is that thank you? Over the years since my diagnosis with T2 in March 2001, I have collected several papers regarding the effects of hyperglycemia on the brain. One of the main reasons I insisted on tests which led to my diagnosis was that I had built up a history of becoming drowsy at the wheel (about 1 1/2 to 2 hours after eating out. Looking back I also had been guilty of becoming drowsy when visiting friends - after a meal, but also after "nibbles". So research into sleepiness and hyperglycemia has been of great interest to me for several years.

There has been much more interest in hypoglycemia - and less accessible research on hyperglycemia. Some research is on Type 1s but the effects on the brain seem to be consistent. I'm a neuropsychologist and so have an interest research which looks at brain scans, etc. as well as studies of cognitive decline, visual disturbances etc...more. Regional Brain Volume Differences Associated With Hyperglycemia and Severe. Hypoglycemia in Youth With Type 1 Diabetes Maybe you just wanted a simpler response. Yes hyperglycemia can and does cause drowsiness, and yes brain damage can occur if you have lots of excursions into high BGs - cognitive loss, visual impairment (retina and occipital and parietal lobes) as well as seizures. So, one needs to really reduce your carb intake - and avoid hyperglycemic episodes.

I was diagnosed with T2 in 2000 and before then, I was very familiar with acetone breath and a lot of sleeping in -- possibly due to sustained high uncontrolled BG's. Foggy-brained is how I would describe the state I was in prior to medical care, which I sought only after I developed frozen shoulders. Recently came across a newsletter article referring to vascular dementia and Alzheimer's as Type 3 diabetes and I could not agree more based on how brain-malfunctioned I had felt before my treatment. Which is why, very difficult as it is, I persevere in stricter bg-control which thankfully this egroup is very supportive of. At best, my A1C was 6 and at worst, it was 8.5 when the foggy-brain returned so now I have accepted the need for insulin (basal) injections.

As regards the exact hyperglycemia- drowsiness relationship, I believe the explanation is out there somewhere. Sometime ago, I followed a link from one of the posts here to "diabetes resources" and I came upon videos of Diabetes Seminar speakers in Europe, maybe Stockholm, and of these was someone presenting research results on human cell response to high, medium(?), and low BGs and he was able to record cell destruction response. Lost the link due to flaky connection, would be very thankful if someone can share the url.
