Have a question with type 2 Diabetes. Blood sugar was 212 very sleepy and falling why is that thank you?
The answer is in your question. For most of us it will suffice to say that high bgs make us sleepy. You ask WHY? That question is above the scope of this list which is not a technical exchange on diabetic physiology. We have people in this list who can go into this especially since most docs simply in the assembly line method they treat diabetics do not have time to answer or research such complicated questions. I volunteer sometimes knowing Gretchen and a few others know the technical ramifications and realize answering can be time consuming if we consider the task of doing the research. Gretchen time is not leisurely. Many people here know how to use the search engines but some find it easier just to throw in the question to see what kind of answers come out. That is fine, I don't think anyone will be upset over this...more
Professor Philippe Froguel said: "Our new study demonstrates that abnormalities in the circadian rhythm may partly be causing diabetes and high blood sugar levels. We hope it will ultimately provide new options for treating people." The new study shows that a mutation called rs1387153, near a gene called MTNR1B, is associated with having an increased average blood sugar level and around a 20 percent elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes. MTNR1B forms part of a signalling pathway that controls the action of the hormone melatonin. This hormone regulates the body's circadian rhythm - the internal clock that controls sleeping and eating patterns - by responding to daylight and darkness...more
So why does high blood sugar makes one sleepy may not be a simple answer. It impacts the circadian rhythm and our sleepiness. Maybe Gretchen or others will tell us why at the molecular level?
