I have gained 13 lbs since i was diagnosed but i did quit smoking. I eat less but my activity could be a little more but it does not seem that I should be gaining.
With uncontrolled blood sugars, a lot of what we eat is just peed out, unused, because there's not enough insulin on board for the body to use all those calories. Then when a person gets their blood glucose levels under control, they can gain weight because suddenly their body can metabolize everything they eat.
So if the diet doesn't change (or exercise isn't stepped up considerably, or both) when glucose levels normalize, naturally the body takes any excess calories and stores them as fat. This is what's at least partially responsible for that old "taking insulin makes you gain weight" saw that you hear all the time.
