However, I have to admit that most people go into medicine with the intent to help. They are quickly trained out of that thought process, though, since they are put through hell in medical school and internship and are told that viewing patients as suffering humans will impair their ability to treat the symptoms. Hence, "The diabetic foot ulcer in room 4A needs..." How about, "The lady in room 4A needs .... to treat her foot ulcer.
The problem is in the training. And it DOES protect them from emotional trauma, but at what cost? And at what cost do we expect interns to work 24 hours a day with severe sleep deprivation? The system is really a mess here.
I even know that the doctor who heaved the glucograph wanted to help, but he'd just returned from a combat zone and was out of control. I can understand his problems, but I am unwilling to endure abuse from him. He needed treatment (which I doubt he ever got) for PTST and maybe anger control issues.
