Has anyone solved the problem of potential weight gain on insulin? I was dreaming that the drug companies would say they are working on this. I am glad people are saying that insulin leads to weight gain as it opens up the fat cells and makes you hungry if you use it. In my case, it was a subtle effect, worked over a period of time. Now there is a good reason for lowering the price of insulin, it promotes weight gain.
It is natural that if we must use meds to restrain weight gain, that maybe the meds should keep the bgs down and also the weight. Food intake has to be controlled and exercise introduced. It is good to use hunger suppressants that do no harm. Byetta has done some harm but we no longer seem to care how many people are killed we just keep on using the drug. Well, if it works for you then great especially if weight loss is achieved. We have to cross our fingers as the FDA has been impaired as a regulatory agency by the drug companies and our politicians who take their money. So far as I understand it only a few have died from byetta, I believe it was pancreatitis. But the point I want to make about the FDA is that they do not test enough and most drugs are approved without knowledge of long term effects on patients. The entire scenario of reporting bad results of meds is to the public by docs, FDA, etc. is not to report at all or report minimally.
It seems that Gretchen's friend, his/her doctor did not conduct a kidney test before using metformin or byetta. Have others? Amber, weight loss is like a problem in calculus. It is a hard question one that may require lots of struggle to find one of the best ways that work. I am sure there is more than one way. If you own the Bernstein book you will find in the section on weight loss.
