Diabetes: Insulin question

Hold the phone here. Your lowest "low" has been 65? There is a difference between a hypoglycemic episode and a "relative low". Hypoglycemia (a dangerous low bg) starts at 60 and under. A "relative low" is the shaky, panicky reaction to a lower than average bg, which in your case, if your usual bg is 135 to 200, could be at 80 or lower. I learned to deal with this when first dx'd by testing every time I felt anything weird going on so that I taught myself what a real low feels like. If you are "low" at any number above 60 you don't need to be eating a lot of sugar to counteract it. You want to train your body to accept the lower numbers. I resorted to cheese instead of sweets whenever I tested above 70. If I was between 60 and 70 I just tested again in about 5 minutes to find out if it was going up or down before taking any action. If it was going down after 5 minutes I would use a glucose tab, wait about 15 minutes and test again, then again 15 minutes later to make sure it was going up.

The problem with automatically reaching for sweets, or even glucose tabs, when you don't know what's really going on is that you set yourself up for a rollercoaster that can take several days to overcome. So, while your body may be in panic mode, your mind doesn't have to be. If you have the presence of mind to reach for sweets, you could just as well reach for your meter and find out the truth.
