Diabetes: Type 2 Diabetic with Glyburide / Metformin and Billberry

The combination of Glyburide/Metformin can work to improve blood glucose (bg) levels as described. I've not taken the combo pill mentioned, but I have taken the two (generic) drugs together. The difference is that I "tailored" my dose to what my
meter told me was working (or not).

I'm not a believer in combo pills, because IMHO, one or the other of the meds won't be optimum for a given individual's medical situation. In the case cited, it apparently was the right combination and that's good. Do know that Glyburide works by forcing the pancreas to produce insulin, whether it's needed or not and this can lead to hypoglycemic episodes (low bg's) that can be dangerous in short order. That's why I "tailored" my dose to what I was eating and didn't hue to the fixed dose given me by my Dr as that either failed to give me the bg results I wanted or took me low.

That said, the tailored dosing of those two meds worked for me and provided excellent control (normal non-diabetic #'s) until I stopped the Glyburide because I'm a pilot and the FAA Medicos fuss about things that can make us go low! I'm now just taking Metformin at max dose (2550mg/day) and watching my carbs closer.

Anyway that's my experience with Gly/Met.

One disadvantage of the combo pill is that if it's not available as a generic, then it's going to cost more than the two generics together. But if you have good insurance that covers the cost that's not an issue. If the combo pill works for you, allowing you to achieve "normal non-diabetic" bg's and avoiding lows, then great! If you can't achieve those kind of it's, then there are better ways to dose the meds.
