Diabetes: Tonic water

I had a vodka tonic this evening. Wow my sugars went crazy. I asked to see the tonic bottle label - lots of high fructose corn syrup! Ugh! Am I the last person to realize tonic water is a no no? Bummer.

It likely won't help when you're out, but if you're not bothered by artificial sweeteners, there are a number of brands of diet tonic water available. I hadn't realized it until recently when I noticed the Western Family brand (sweetened with aspartame) in my local supermarket. During our recent hot spell, when I want something other than just water or iced tea but I'm not in the mood for the sweetness of lemonade or a diet soft drink - a glass of diet tonic with a splash of lime juice really hits the spot - and I don't even miss the gin.
