Wow! They're even mentioning that "healthy people" (I read that as "non-diabetics) have HbA1c's in the 4%-5% range! Where have I heard that before from a single Dr, but not in the vocabulary of the greater medical community!
I'm not sure where/how they came up with the idea that "Previous studies have been inconclusive" about the positive benefits of lower bg levels as reflected by HbA1c. DCCT & UKPDS clearly showed that there is less complication risk with lower HbA1c. In fact the conclusion was so clear that the studies were terminated early.
They do mention the risk of hypoglycemia, particularly in the elderly & inferm, but IMHO, that has to do with the poor usual treatment regimen rather than the goal of low-normal bg goals. Bg levels for this study were an average of 6.5%, so imagine the even greater improvement in complication reduction if as some here on this list have by reducing their levels to the real non-diabetic 4%-5% levels and are doing that while avoiding hypo's.
